Mariners 7, Rangers 1
Roenis Elias worked 6 2/3 innings for his first major-league victory and Mike Zunino homered as Seattle cruised past host Texas.
Elias (1-1) gave up one run and five hits in his third big-league start as the Mariners ended a two-game skid. Elias struck out five and walked two and the only run against him came on Kevin Kouzmanoff’s single in the seventh.
Zunino was one of four Seattle players with two hits and he began the scoring with a booming one-out homer to center field in the fifth. Michael Saunders, Kyle Seager and Justin Smoak also had multiple hits and the Mariners finished with 12 overall.
Saunders laced an RBI triple in the sixth off Colby Lewis (0-1) and scored on a single by Seager for the first two runs of a six-run uprising. Dustin Ackley and Zunino added RBIs singles and other runs crossed on Brad Miller’s fielder’s choice and Robinson Cano’s sacrifice fly.
Prince Fielder hit a one-out double in the seventh before Kouzmanoff singled down the first-base line to break up the shutout. Lewis was charged with four runs (three earned) and eight hits in 5 1/3 innings in his first big-league outing since July 18, 2012.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Texas manager Ron Washington was ejected in the sixth inning after disputing a replay review that was overturned and awarded the Mariners with their sixth run. Rangers C J.P. Arencibia lost the ball while transferring during a force play at the plate and Ackley was originally ruled out before the Mariners challenged the ruling. … Seattle RF Logan Morrison left after the top of the first inning due to hamstring tightness and was replaced by Saunders. … The Rangers designated RHP Daniel McCutchen for assignment to open up a roster spot for Lewis.
