Brewers 10, White Sox 7
MILWAUKEE - Back-to-back home runs by Elian Herrera and Khris Davis broke an eighth-inning tie and led the Milwaukee Brewers to a 10-7 victory over the Chicago White Sox Monday night at Miller Park.
The late burst helped the Brewers overcome a rough outing by their bullpen, which allowed five runs in the seventh and eighth innings.
Second baseman Scooter Gennett's error in the seventh helped the White Sox battle back from a 6-2 deficit. Chicago scored three runs after the error and tied the game in the eighth against right-hander Jonathan Broxton (1-0).
White Sox left-hander Zach Duke retired pinch-hitter Jean Segura to open the eighth then walked catcher Martin Maldonado.
That brought up Herrera, playing third base in place of injured Aramis Ramirez. Herrera sent a 1-0 Duke fastball to left for his third home run of the season.
Duke struck out shortstop Hector Gomez for the second out, and against Davis, pinch-hitting for the pitcher, Duke missed on another 1-0 fastball, which Davis drove for his third homer of the season.
Right-hander Francisco Rodriguez earned his seventh save of the season with a scoreless ninth.
Center fielder Adam Eaton had four hits and reached base five times for the White Sox. He also drove in a pair of runs, including the tying run in the eighth.
Batting cleanup for the first time this season, center fielder Carlos Gomez got right to work in the first inning with a two-run home run to right field that gave the Brewers an early 3-0 lead.
Milwaukee added two more runs in the second inning, on a double by Herrera and a single by right fielder Ryan Braun. Hector Gomez added another RBI double in the fourth inning.
Catcher Geovany Soto ended Wily Peralta's shutout bid in the fifth with a two-run home run to left-center, cutting the deficit to 6-2.
The White Sox went on to load the bases, but Peralta escaped by getting first baseman Jose Abreu to bounce into a force at second.
NOTES: Brewers 3B Aramis Ramirez underwent an MRI that revealed no serious issues with his ailing back, but he missed his fourth straight game. ... RHP Javy Guerra accepted his assignment to Triple-A Charlotte. The White Sox designated him May 5. ... Over the last 14 games before Monday, the Brewers were batting .383 (36-for-94) with runners in scoring position, boosting their overall average with RISP from .203 to .283. ... The White Sox were 2-11 in road games before Monday and had been outscored 79-37 away from U.S. Cellular Field. ... The former AL Central rivals had not met in the regular season since 2012.
