Indians 3, White Sox 1
CHICAGO -- Trevor Bauer gave up four hits in 7 1/3 innings and struck out seven as the Cleveland Indians snapped the Chicago White Sox six-game winning streak with a 3-1 victory on Tuesday at U.S. Cellular Field.
Bauer (3-1) recorded his third straight solid outing against the White Sox this season before leaving the game with a two-run lead in the eighth inning. This season against Chicago, Bauer has picked up two of his three victories while allowing three earned runs in 21 1/3 innings while striking out 22.
First baseman Brandon Moss provided a bit of breathing room for the Indians (15-23) in the eighth with a solo home run off reliever Zach Putnam.
The cushion proved to be enough for Bauer and the Indians bullpen, which used three pitchers after Bauer left the game after allowing a lead-off single to center fielder Adam Eaton.
The White Sox (18-18) put runners on first and second with one out before Cody Allen struck out right fielder Avisail Garcia to end the inning.
Allen pitched a perfect ninth inning to pick up his seventh save in eight appearances and hand the White Sox their first loss since May 11.
Chicago's Jose Quintana (2-4) allowed two earned runs on eight hits in seven innings.
Cleveland took a 2-1 in the fifth inning when shortstop Jose Ramirez drove a RBI double into the left field corner, scoring Jason Kipnis from first base after the second baseman reached for the third straight time with a two-out single.
Bauer -- who struck out 10 in his previous start against St. Louis -- held the White Sox hitless for 3 2/3 innings, striking out two without issuing a walk. Chicago first baseman Jose Abreu laced a ground-rule double to center field with two outs before designated hitter Adam LaRoche walked.
The White Sox tied the score 1-1 when right fielder Avisail Garcia lined an RBI single, scoring Abreu from second base. The run snapped Bauer's string of 16 scoreless innings on the road to start a season -- the longest such streak by an Indians' starter since 1914.
Bauer made matters worse, loading the bases when third baseman Conor Gillaspie walked. But Bauer struck out shortstop Alexei Ramirez to end the threat, leaving the game tied until Ramirez's double in the fifth.
The Indians took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Kipnis led off with a triple after Garcia misplayed a sharp fly ball that ended up sailing over Garcia's head and bounced off the right field wall. Cleveland left fielder Michael Brantley drove Kipnis in with a sacrifice fly.
