Mariners 3, Tigers 2 (12 innings)
DETROIT -- Mike Zunino ripped a go-ahead double and the Seattle Mariners held on for a 3-2, 12-inning victory over the Detroit Tigers on Thursday afternoon at Comerica Park.
Zunino, who entered the game at catcher in the 10th inning, drove in shortstop Chris Taylor after failing to execute two sacrifice attempts. Taylor reached on a leadoff single against Ian Krol (1-3).
Fernando Rodney (3-4) pitched an inning of scoreless relief to get the victory. Tom Wilhelmsen notched his first save, leaving two runners stranded by getting Jefry Marte to hit into a fielder's choice.
The game featured a pitcher's duel between two impending free agents who could be traded before the non-waiver deadline at the end of the month.
Tigers ace David Price allowed two runs and five hits and struck out seven in eight-plus innings. The Mariners' Hisashi Iwakuma lasted seven innings after a shaky beginning, holding the Tigers to two runs and six hits while striking out seven.
Third baseman Kyle Seager hit a solo home run and right fielder Mark Trumbo had an RBI single for Seattle (44-52). Designated hitter Victor Martinez doubled in two first-inning runs for Detroit (47-48).
Seattle took the lead with one out in the first. Seager, who came into the game 0-for-10 against Price, jumped on the first pitch he saw and drilled it over the right-field wall.
The Tigers responded in the bottom of the inning with two runs. Second baseman Ian Kinsler reached on an infield single and left fielder Yoenis Cespedes smacked a 3-0 pitch into right to put runners on first and third. Martinez followed with his extra-base hit into the right-center field gap.
The Mariners tied it in the seventh. With second baseman Robinson Cano on second and two out, Trumbo slapped an opposite-field single. The ball bounced past right fielder J.D. Martinez, but Trumbo was still credited with an RBI.
