Blue Jays 3, Yankees 1
TORONTO - Pinch-hitter Russell Martin drove in the tie-breaking run with an infield single in a three-run eighth inning as the Toronto Blue Jays came back to defeat the New York Yankees 3-1 on Monday.
Blue Jays right-handed knuckleballer R.A. Dickey (1-3) held the Yankees to three hits and two walks over eight innings to earn his first win of the season in six starts and snap New York's three-game winning streak.
Left-hander Brett Cecil pitched the ninth for his second save of the season.
Right-hander Chase Whitley held the Blue Jays to six hits and no walks while striking out six over seven innings and did not factor in the decision in his second start of the season.
Whitley was at his best when the Blue Jays had runners at second and third with none out in the sixth after second baseman Devon Travis singled and third baseman Josh Donaldson doubled.
Whitley wiggled out of the inning when designated hitter Jose Bautista grounded out to third, first baseman Edwin Encarnacion struck out and center fielder Kevin Pillar popped out to shortstop.
The Yankees had their first threat in the seventh when right fielder Carlos Beltran led off with a double to deep right. He moved to third when second baseman Stephen Drew grounded out to the pitcher. Third baseman Chase Headley walked.
Beltran scored for a 1-0 lead when first baseman Garrett Jones had his grounder to first squirt past Encarnacion. Travis retrieved the ball to get the out at first.
Right-hander Chris Martin (0-1) took over from Whitley in the eighth inning and allowed one-out singles to Donaldson and Bautista.
Right-hander Dellin Betances took over and gave up a game-tying RBI double to left by Encarnacion. After Pillar popped out, Martin batted for catcher Josh Thole and singled to third base, scoring the go-ahead run. A throwing error was charged to Headley that allowed the second run to score.
The Blue Jays failed to score Ezequiel Carrera after the right fielder bunted for a single with one out in the third inning and continued to third on a throwing error by Whitley.
Whitley struck out Travis and ended the inning on a grounder to third by Donaldson.
Dickey, who entered the game 0-3 with a 5.23 earned-run average in five starts, allowed a second-inning single Headley with two outs in the second, but the inning ended on a superb play by shortstop Ryan Goins on a grounder up the middle by Jones.
The Yankees had a leadoff walk by left fielder Brett Gardner erased in the fourth when designated hitter Alex Rodriguez bounced to shortstop to start a double play.
Thole had Toronto's first hit, a single to right with two out in the second.
