Rangers 5, Yankees 2
NEW YORK -- Yovani Gallardo pitched six effective innings and Prince Fielder drove in two more runs as the Texas Rangers completed their first three-game sweep at Yankee Stadium in over 12 years with a 5-2 victory over the New York Yankees Sunday night.
Gallardo (4-6) settled down after a rocky opening and allowed two runs and four hits for his second win in three starts after four straight losses. He gave up both runs in the first inning but one hit the rest of the way, retiring 15 of the final 17 hitters he faced.
Gallardo joined John Thomson as the last two Texas pitchers to get the win when the Rangers completed the sweep in New York. Thomson pitched a three-hitter at old Yankee Stadium on May 18, 2003.
Four Texas relievers combined on three scoreless innings. Sam Freeman escaped a jam created by Ross Ohlendorf in the eighth and Shawn Tolleson struck out two in the ninth for his third save.
Fielder capped a productive weekend by getting his second straight three-hit game. He had an RBI double in the first and a run-scoring single in the seventh that nearly was his fourth home run of the series.
Second baseman Adam Rosales hit a two-run home run off New York left-hander Chris Capuano (0-2) as the Rangers homered in their ninth straight game and improved to 11-3 in their last 14 road games. Right fielder Shin-Soo Choo added an RBI double in the seventh when the Rangers tacked on two insurance runs.
Catcher Brian McCann's two-run single in the first accounted for the lone runs as the Yankees lost their sixth in a row and fell to 1-10 in their last 11 games.
Capuano allowed three runs and eight hits in 4 1/3 innings.
Texas took a 1-0 lead with one out in the first by capitalizing on a defensive miscue. Choo reached on an error by second baseman Jose Pirela, who was charged with New York's 33rd error after the ball skipped off his glove.
The Rangers right fielder raced home on a double to right by Fielder.
The Yankees quickly gained the lead in the bottom of the first on a two-out, two-strike single by McCann. That came after left fielder Brett Gardner was thrown out trying to go from first to third on a single by third baseman Chase Headley.
Texas took a 3-2 lead with two outs in the second when Rosales hit Capuano's 2-2 changeup just over the left field wall for his third home run.
