Yankees 2, Marlins 1
NEW YORK -- Right-hander Michael Pineda took a no-hitter into the seventh inning, and the New York Yankees held on for a 2-1 victory over the Miami Marlins Wednesday night.
Pineda (8-3) pitched 6 2/3 innings and lost his bid at the team's 12th no-hitter when left fielder Christian Yelich opened the seventh by hitting a first-pitch fastball into the Yankees' bullpen for a solo homer.
That was Pineda's 95th pitch, and he threw five more before exiting to a standing ovation from the crowd of 43,048.
Even if the no-hitter remained, Pineda likely would not have pitched much longer. His season high is 111 pitches May 10 when he struck out 16 in seven innings against the Baltimore Orioles. Earlier this month, he had a start pushed back five days to keep him fresh.
In his bid to become the first Yankee to throw a no-hitter since David Cone's perfect game on July 18, 1999, Pineda struck out nine, mostly on sliders, and issued two walks.
Pineda threw 62 of 100 pitches for strikes before Chasen Shreve recorded the final out of the seventh.
Yankees reliever Justin Wilson put runners at first and third with one out in the eighth, and the Marlins nearly tied it against Dellin Betances when first baseman Garrett Jones made a high throw to the plate as shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria slid in and was ruled safe. Replays appeared to show that catcher Brian McCann's tag was in time, and following a review of two minutes, 41 seconds, plate umpire Dale Scott's initial call was overturned.
In the ninth, Betances gave up a two-out single to center fielder Marcell Ozuna and walked first baseman Justin Bour but fanned catcher Jeff Mathis to notch his fourth save.
New York designated hitter Alex Rodriguez moved to within three hits of 3,000 with a pair of singles, including an RBI hit in the first. Right fielder Carlos Beltran increased the lead to 2-0 with a single in the fifth.
Miami right-hander Jose Urena (1-3) allowed two runs and six hits in six innings.
The only pitchers to throw no-hitters against the Marlins were Ramon Martinez for the Los Angeles Dodgers on July 14, 1995; Roy Halladay for the Philadelphia Phillies on May 29, 2010; and Jordan Zimmermann for the Washington Nationals on Sept. 28, 2014.
