Yankees 9, Marlins 4

NEW YORK -- Alex Rodriguez collected his 2,998th and 2,999th career hits, and Carlos Beltran belted a go-ahead, two-run home run Thursday as the New York Yankees defeated the Miami Marlins 9-4.

Rodriguez singled in the first and fifth innings against Miami starter Mat Latos before flying out on his first attempt at the 3,000-hit milestone with two outs in the sixth against Mike Dunn (1-4).

The New York designated hitter came up with no outs in the eighth but did not swing as reliever Sam Dyson threw four consecutive fastballs out of the strike zone. That prompted profane chants from most of a disappointed crowd that did not witness history. The walk also sent many fans to the exits.

Those who remained saw Rodriguez slide home on a wild pitch for New York's seventh run. The Yankees led 5-3 entering the eighth but put the game away with four runs. Catcher Brian McCann hit an RBI single, right fielder Chris Young added a run-scoring double, and second baseman Stephen Drew's sacrifice fly scored Young.

The Yankees took their final lead of the night with one out in the seventh when Beltran's two-run shot broke a 3-3 tie. Beltran drove a full-count pitch from Dunn into the left center field seats for his fifth home run of the season.

New York tied the game at 3 on a two-run home run by left fielder Brett Gardner with two outs in the sixth.

Miami built a 3-1 lead by scoring in three consecutive innings.

Right fielder Giancarlo Stanton hit his 25th home run with one out in the sixth. Stanton's mammoth blast to left field came after left fielder Christian Yelich had an RBI groundout in the fourth and catcher Jeff Mathis lifted a sacrifice fly in the fifth.

New York left-hander CC Sabathia allowed three runs and five hits in six innings. Chasen Shreve (4-1) pitched a scoreless seventh for the win.

Latos allowed three runs and nine hits in 5 2/3 innings. Dunn yielded two runs in his lone inning.

Rodriguez hit an RBI single in the first inning and a one-out single in the fifth.

McCann and Miami second baseman Dee Gordon finished with three hits apiece.
