Blue Jays 11, Yankees 5

NEW YORK - Catcher Russell Martin homered twice and drove in four runs as the Toronto Blue Jays opened a four-game series at Yankee Stadium with an 11-5 victory over the New York Yankees on Friday night.

Martin had his 14th game with at least four RBI and first since June 6, 2014 for Pittsburgh against Milwaukee. He began his big night with an RBI single with one out in the third which chased rookie right-hander Luis Severino (3-2). He recorded his 10th career multi-home run game with a solo shot off Andrew Bailey in the fifth and a two-run drive off Chasen Shreve with nobody out in the seventh.

Third baseman Josh Donaldson and first baseman Justin Smoak hit two-run home runs during a five-run first inning off Severino as the Blue Jays (80-60) collected 16 hits and pushed their lead over the Yankees (77-62) to a season-high 2 1/2 games.

Designated hitter Edwin Encarnacion reached base for the 40th straight game, extending his club record with a double in the first before hitting a two-run home run in the fourth.

Shortstop Troy Tulowitzki had an RBI single for Toronto, which beat the Yankees for the fifth straight game in New York and ninth time in 13 overall meetings.

Shortstop Didi Gregorius hit a three-run home run and drove in four runs for the Yankees while left fielder Brett Gardner lifted a sacrifice fly. Designated hitter Alex Rodriguez struck out four times for the sixth time in his career and heard some boos after his last strikeout.

Left-hander David Price (15-5) pitched on five days' rest due to Thursday's rainout and allowed two runs and six hits. Price improved to 6-1 with Toronto and highlighted his outing by striking out Rodriguez three times.

Price exited with a seven-run lead but the Yankees chipped away when Gregorius hit a three-run shot off LaTroy Hawkins. After Gregorius hit his ninth home run, Martin made it 11-5 with his 19th home run of the season.

Severino (3-3) had the shortest of his seven career starts, allowing six runs and six hits in 2 1/3 innings.

Donaldson made it 2-0 when he drove a full count fastball over the left-field fence and into the bleachers for his 38th home run. The blast came after Severino slipped on the mound a few pitches earlier but he stayed in after making a warmup throw.

The Blue Jays extended the lead to 3-0 when Encarnacion doubled and got his right leg on the plate just ahead of Brian McCann's sweep tag on Tulowitzki's single to left field. Four pitches later, Toronto had a 5-0 lead when Smoak pulled a 2-1 fastball over the right-field wall.

Toronto chased Severino after 71 pitches when Russell Martin singled on a full count for a 6-0 lead.

A sacrifice fly by Gardner made it 6-1 with two outs in the third but Price fanned Rodriguez for the second time with his fastball.

Toronto took an 8-1 lead when Encarnacion drove a 1-0 pitch from Chris Martin into the lower rows of the second deck in left field. The Yankees scored their second run on a single by Gregorius in the fourth.

The Blue Jays extended the lead to 9-2 when Russell Martin drove a 1-1 pitch from Andrew Bailey into the visiting bullpen beyond the left-center field fence.
