Nationals 11, Diamondbacks 1
PHOENIX -- Washington third baseman Yunel Escobar had five singles, first baseman Ryan Zimmerman and center fielder Denard Span homered and right-hander Max Scherzer got the win in his first game back in Arizona in the Nationals' 11-1 victory over the Diamondbacks on Monday at Chase Field.
Escobar singled four of the first five innings as the Nationals built an 11-0 lead for Scherzer, who spent his first two seasons with the Diamondbacks.
Span and Zimmerman homered in the first inning off right-hander Josh Collmenter (3-4), who faced 13 batters and gave up a career-high nine runs in 1 1-3 innings.
Span had two hits and two RBIs, Zimmerman and catcher Wilson Ramos had three RBIs, and second baseman Danny Espinosa and Scherzer had two hits apiece for the Nationals, who tied a season high with 15 hits.
Scherzer (3-3) gave up seven hits and struck out six in seven innings as Washington (18-15) won its fifth straight and eighth in nine games.
Arizona first baseman Jordan Pacheco, who replaced Paul Goldschmidt in the fourth inning, homered to break Scherzer's shutout with one out in the sixth inning. Goldschmidt has started every game and had played all but four innings this season.
Second baseman Chris Owings had two hits for Arizona (14-17), which has lost three of four.
Washington right fielder Bryce Harper had an RBI single in four at-bats. He had 10 hits and 13 RBIs in his previous four games, with six homers.
Span homered on the second pitch of the game, and Zimmerman hit a three-run homer later in the first inning for a 4-0 lead. Harper flied out to the fence in the right-field corner before Zimmerman batted.
Five of the first six Nationals' hitters in the second inning singled, including Scherzer. Harper's line single to right drove in Span for a 7-0 lead, knocking out Collmenter. Left-hander Vidal Nuno entered, and he walked Zimmerman to load the bases. Ramos followed with a three-run double to make it 10-0.
Escobar singled home a run in the fifth inning for an 11-0 lead.
