Cubs 3, Nationals 2

CHICAGO -- Addison Russell's walk-off RBI double scored Jonathan Herrera from second in the bottom the ninth to lift the Chicago Cubs to a 3-2 victory over the Washington Nationals on Tuesday.

Russell's two-out hit to deep center snapped a 2-2 tie and ended a two-game Cubs losing skid.

Herrera reached on a pinch-hit fielder's choice with one out and advanced to scoring position on Nationals shortstop Ian Desmond's throwing error.

Cubs right-hander Hector Rondon (3-0) worked a scoreless ninth for the victory.

Nationals left-hander Matt Grace (2-1) pitched 2/3 of the ninth innings and took the loss.

Nationals center fielder Denard Span collected his second home run in two days to snap a 1-1 tie with two out in the eighth inning.

The solo shot to right off Cubs right-handed reliever Pedro Strop temporarily gave Washington a 2-1 lead.

But Chicago third baseman Kris Bryant matched it with his seventh homer of the season in the Cubs eighth. The solo shot to left off Nationals right-handed reliever Aaron Barrett forced a 2-2 tie.

Cubs starter Kyle Hendricks (1-1) had no decision for the seventh time in nine starts this season and fourth in his last five. Nationals right-hander Jordan Zimmermann (4-2) also had no decision after wins in his last two starts.

Harper tied the game at 1-1 with his leadoff solo home run to left for the fifth straight homer in the series without anyone on base. Harper's shot was his 17th of the season and 12th in May.

Hendricks worked seven full innings. He allowed four hits, struck out four and walked two. Zimmerman, pulled for a pinch-hitter in the eight, also had a seven-inning outing -- including six shutout frames. He allowed one run on six hits, walked three and struck out five.

Desmond doubled to right center with two out in the sixth to extend his hitting streak to 11 games.

Cubs center fielder Dexter Fowler led off the Cubs first with a solo home run to right.

Fowler launched a 2-2 pitch from Zimmermann for his fifth homer of the season. It was his 11th career lead-off shot and second this year.

Later in the inning first baseman Anthony Rizzo doubled, reached third on shortstop Starlin Castro's ground out and was caught trying to steal home.

Chicago threatened in the third inning with runners at first and third and two outs, but Castro hit into a fielder's choice to close the inning.

Washington managed two hits and two walks off Hendricks in the first five innings, but the Nationals also hit into two double plays in that span.
