Mets 1, Reds 1 (susp., 6 innings)
NEW YORK -- Torrential rain at Citi Field forced Saturday afternoon's game between the New York Mets and Cincinnati Reds to be suspended after the sixth inning with the score tied 1-1.
The game will resume at 1:10 p.m. ET Sunday. The regularly scheduled series finale will follow 30 minutes later.
The suspended game is the first for the Mets since May 24, 2013, and the first for the Reds since April 14, 2014.
Despite a pregame shower, an ominous forecast and rainouts already announced in Philadelphia and Baltimore, the game -- which was scheduled to be followed by a concert by the Steve Miller Band -- began on time at 4:12 p.m.
But a steady rain began falling in the second inning and the grounds crew spent the middle part of several innings applying drying agent to the base paths and pitcher's mound.
The Mets took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on right fielder Curtis Granderson's homer.
New York was just three outs from turning the game official in the top of the fifth when Granderson dropped a leadoff blooper by Reds catcher Tucker Barnhart. Granderson ran in from deep right and momentarily had the ball in his glove, but it popped out during his slide.
Barnhart went to third on a sacrifice by right-handed pitcher Michael Lorenzen and scored on a double by second baseman Brandon Phillips.
The double extended Phillips' hitting streak against the Mets in New York to 31 games, the second-longest streak by a visiting player at Shea Stadium and/or Citi Field. Luis Castillo hit in 32 straight games for the Florida Marlins from Sept. 2, 2001 through Sept. 20, 2005.
The Mets stranded eight runners after Granderson's homer and left the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth, when Granderson flied to left on a 3-1 count.
The grounds crew began rolling the tarp onto the field moments later at 6:10 p.m. Both dugouts remained empty during the delay and the game was officially called 53 minutes later.
Granderson was the lone player on either team with two hits.
Mets right-hander Matt Harvey allowed one run, five hits and two walks while striking out three in six innings. Lorenzen gave up one run, six hits and four walks while striking out four in 5 2/3 innings.
