Cardinals 1, Brewers 0

ST. LOUIS -- St. Louis Cardinals left fielder Matt Holliday's National League-record streak of reaching base ended at 45 games, but it wasn't enough to prevent the Cardinals from returning to the win column.

Despite the ejection of Holliday and manager Mike Matheny in the bottom of the seventh inning Tuesday night, St. Louis blanked the Milwaukee Brewers 1-0 at sold-out Busch Stadium.

Starter Lance Lynn (4-4) threw 7 2/3 innings, giving up five hits and one walk with five strikeouts in beating Milwaukee (18-35) for the second time this year.

Reliever Kevin Siegrist got the eighth inning's last out, and closer Trevor Rosenthal worked the ninth for his 16th save in 17 chances, inducing a game-ending 5-4-3 double play from third baseman Aramis Ramirez with runners at the corners.

Brewers starter Tyler Cravy took a tough-luck loss in his big league debut. Cravy pitched seven solid innings, yielding only four hits and a run with two walks and six strikeouts.

The last strikeout caused an uproar among the crowd of 42,835. Holliday took a 1-2 pitch that caught the inside corner, according to plate umpire Joe West. Holliday argued at length and gestured multiple times, eventually earning the fourth ejection of his career.

Matheny ran out of the dugout and picked up the argument, drawing his ninth career ejection.

The Cardinals (34-18) improved to 21-7 at home.

St. Louis started the scoring in the bottom of the second when first baseman Mark Reynolds looped a two-out RBI single to center, plating right fielder Randal Grichuk, who lined a one-out double down the left field line.

Lynn made that slender lead hold up through five innings, permitting only two hits and fanning two. Both strikeouts came against center fielder Carlos Gomez after nine and 11-pitch at-bats.

Aside from the second, Cravy matched Lynn pitch-for-pitch. Called up late Sunday night from Triple-A Colorado Springs, Cravy faced just one batter over the minimum through five innings, inducing three double-play balls.

NOTES: Milwaukee claimed INF Hernan Perez off waivers from Detroit on Tuesday, designating INF Elian Herrera for assignment. Herrera batted .212 with four homers and 15 RBIs in 99 at-bats this year. ... St. Louis has lost the first game of its last five home series with the Brewers, dating back to last April. ... Milwaukee 1B Adam Lind (back), who didn't start in the last two games, was back in the lineup Tuesday night, hitting fourth. Lind pinch-hit a ninth-inning single Monday night but was replaced by a pinch-runner.
