Mets 6, Phillies 3
NEW YORK -- Shortstop Wilmer Flores hit a tie-breaking three-run homer in the sixth inning and right-hander Bartolo Colon moved into a tie for the National League lead in wins the day after his 42nd birthday as the New York Mets beat the Philadelphia Phillies 6-3 at Citi Field on Monday afternoon.
The Mets (25-21) snapped a three-game losing streak and improved to 18-6 at home. The Phillies (19-28) fell to 7-18 on the road, including 3-5 on a 10-game trip that ends Wednesday.
Flores' seventh homer of the season was the third of the game for the Mets, who also received solo shots from first baseman Lucas Duda in the third and left fielder Michael Cuddyer in the fourth. Second baseman Daniel Murphy had an RBI single in the first.
Murphy began the rally against left-hander Elvis Araujo (1-1) with a leadoff single. Araujo was lifted for right-hander Justin De Fratus, who walked Cuddyer. Flores got ahead of the count 3-1 before drilling a homer to left.
Murphy and right fielder Curtis Granderson each had two hits.
Colon, who gave up 15 runs (13 earned) over 9 1/3 innings in his previous two starts, allowed three runs on six hits and two walks while striking out six over six innings. At 7-3, Colon -- the second-oldest player in baseball -- is tied for the league lead in wins with St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Michael Wacha, who is 18 years Colon's junior.
Colon also singled in the fifth inning, his 13th hit in 177 career at-bats, and tagged up on a long fly to center.
Right-hander Jeurys Familia, the Mets' fourth pitcher, earned his 14th save with a hitless ninth.
Phillies second baseman Chase Utley had two hits, including a two-run single in the third, while first baseman Ryan Howard lofted a sacrifice fly in the fifth.
Right-hander Severino Gonzalez allowed three runs on six hits and no walks while striking out a career-high eight over 4 1/3 innings in his fourth big league start for the Phillies.
