Reynolds' homer helps Mets complete sweep of Royals
NEW YORK - Matt Reynolds belted his first career home run to snap a tie in the sixth inning as the New York Mets posted a 4-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals at Citi Field on Wednesday afternoon.
The Mets (38-32) swept the two-game World Series rematch from the Royals (38-33) and finished 3-1 this season against Kansas City, which won last year's Fall Classic in five games.
Reynolds, who played left field for the first time as a professional Wednesday, struck out in his first two at-bats before homering to the opposite field off Joakim Soria (3-3) with two outs in the sixth.
The homer made a winner out of Noah Syndergaard (8-2), who allowed three runs on eight hits and no walks while striking out four over six innings. Jerry Blevins threw a perfect seventh inning, Addison Reed worked around a leadoff single in the eighth and Jeurys Familia notched his 24th save with a 1-2-3 ninth.
Asdrubal Cabrera went 2-for-3 with two runs scored during an impressive all-around day for the Mets. In the fourth, Cabrera raced home on James Loney's single and scored the Mets' first run by sliding around the tag of Royals catcher Salvador Perez. Cabrera then gave the Mets a 3-2 lead by hitting a two-run homer in the fifth.
In the eighth, Cabrera robbed Eric Hosmer of a base hit by ranging behind second base and made a no-look throw to Neil Walker to force Alcides Escobar.
Mets center fielder Yoenis Cespedes was pulled after the fifth inning due to left wrist discomfort. He appeared to injure himself while batting in the bottom of the fifth.
Cheslor Cuthbert hit a solo homer for the Royals while Whit Merrifield and Paulo Orlando each had RBI singles. Escobar and Jarrod Dyson had two hits apiece while Dyson added a stolen base.
Royals left-hander Danny Duffy allowed three runs on four hits and four walks while striking out eight over 4 2/3 innings.
NOTES: The Mets recalled RHP Logan Verrett from Triple-A Las Vegas and optioned INF Ty Kelly to the same affiliate. Verrett provides an extra bullpen arm for the Mets, who got 8 2/3 innings out of relievers after RHP Bartolo Colon took a line drive off his right thumb in Tuesday's 2-1 win, as well as insurance for Colon, who is expected to make his next start as scheduled Sunday. ... Royals LF Alex Gordon (wrist) was scheduled to play his fourth rehab game for Double-A Arkansas on Wednesday. ... The Royals are the third reigning World Series champion team to play in the stadium in which it won the title the previous season. The 2001 New York Yankees visited the Mets at Shea Stadium while the 2005 Boston Red Sox played the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium.
