Athletics 5, Yankees 2
NEW YORK -- Kendall Graveman pitched effectively into the seventh inning and the Oakland Athletics scored three times in the top of the fourth inning en route to a 5-2 victory over the New York Yankees Wednesday night.
Billy Burns doubled twice and had three hits while scoring the A's first run of the fourth. Chris Coghlan had an RBI double, Josh Reddick added a run-scoring single and Stephen Vogt lifted a sacrifice fly as Oakland won its fourth straight.
Khris Davis added a two-run single in the eighth for the Athletics.
Those runs were enough for Graveman (1-1), who allowed one run and third hits in 6 1/3 innings. Graveman mixed in his cutter and slider effectively to get a career-high eight strikeouts while tying a career-high with 111 pitches.
Graveman allowed a one-out solo home run to Didi Gregorius in the second inning, but only two Yankees reached base the rest of his outing. His night ended when he walked Chase Headley with one out in the seventh.
Oakland's bullpen helped Graveman get his first win since July 4. Marc Rzepczynski finished the seventh with the assistance of replay on a double play.
Ryan Dull allowed a two-out home run to Carlos Beltran in the eighth and Sean Doolittle recorded his second save.
After Gregorius' home run, New York's biggest threat came with one out in the seventh. Gregorius singled to center field and the Yankees had runners at second and third following an error by Burns.
Aaron Hicks hit a slow tapper to Coghlan at third. Coghlan tagged Gregorius on the leg and completed the double play by throwing to first. The Yankees challenged but the call was upheld following a brief review.
New York's Nathan Eovaldi (0-2) allowed three runs and eight hits, with five of those hits coming in the fifth inning.
The Yankees (5-8) lost for the sixth time in seven games and were hitless in four at-bats with runners in scoring position. New York is 4-for-58 with runners in scoring position over its last seven games.
After leaving the bases loaded in the first, New York went ahead with one out in the second when Gregorius drove a 0-1 pitch for his second home run of the season.
Oakland took a 2-1 lead before an out was recorded in the fourth.
Burns doubled and then scored on a double to the center-field warning track by Coghlan, who scored when catcher Brian McCann dropped the throw from left fielder Hicks on Reddick's single.
The Athletics went up 3-1 on Vogt's sacrifice fly and loaded the bases when Davis singled off the third-base bag. The inning ended when Hicks threw out Danny Valenica at the plate after catching Yonder Alonso's fly ball.
