Athletics 7, Yankees 3
NEW YORK -- Rich Hill struck out 10 in six innings as the Oakland Athletics hit four home runs and completed a three-game sweep of the New York Yankees with a 7-3 victory Thursday.
Hill (2-2) allowed two runs (one earned) and three hits but constantly kept the Yankees off-balance with his curveball and fastball. He turned in his 10th career double-digit strikeout game and second this season.
Hill struck out Carlos Beltran three times on curveballs and fanned every Yankee except Alex Rodriguez and Aaron Hicks. The veteran left-hander finished one shy of his career high for strikeouts set June 7, 2007 for the Chicago Cubs.
Hill likely would have pitched beyond the sixth but also walked four and threw 103 pitches. By the time his night ended, Oakland had a 4-2 lead.
Mark Canha hit the game-tying home run with one out in the fifth off Luis Severino.
The Athletics took the lead in the seventh inning on consecutive pitches against Chasen Shreve (1-1). Khris Davis drove a fastball to center field for his first home run of the season and Coco Crisp sent a fastball into the second deck in left field.
Chris Coghlan added a two-run homer in the eighth and Canha lifted a sacrifice fly in the ninth as Oakland won its fifth straight game and completed a three-game sweep in New York for the first time since June 9-11, 2006.
Crisp's home run turned out to be the game-winner when Fernando Rodriguez allowed a single to Starlin Castro with two outs in the seventh to make it a one-run game. John Axford quickly finished the inning by retiring Beltran and also pitched a scoreless eighth.
Liam Hendriks gave up two hits in the ninth and Ryan Madson quickly notched his sixth save.
Crisp's home run drew loud boos from the crowd, who watched the Yankees struggle offensively and lose for the seventh time in eight games.
New York's first two runs came on a bloop single by Aaron Hicks in the second and a dribbler to the third base side of the mound by Austin Romine with two outs in the fifth.
Severino allowed two runs and seven hits in six innings.
The Yankees took a 1-0 lead with two outs in the second on a bloop single by Hicks.
The A's opened the fourth with three straight hits and tied the score on a single by Jed Lowrie.
New York capitalized on a throwing error by Hill to regain the lead in the bottom of the fourth.
Rodriguez was picked off, but Hill's throw sailed past Canha at first base into foul territory down the right-field line, giving the Yankees a runner on first with one out. With two outs, the Yankees took the lead when Hill was unable to field Romine's dribbler to the third-base side of the mound.
Oakland tied the score in the fifth when Canha drove a 2-2 pitch into the right-center field seats.
