D-backs top Cards to snaps losing streak at Busch

ST. LOUIS -- A late burst of offense gave the Arizona Diamondbacks their first win in St. Louis since 2013.

Scoring five runs in the eighth and two more in the ninth, Arizona snapped a seven-game losing streak at Busch Stadium on Friday night with an 11-7 dumping of the Cardinals.

Chris Owings' bases-loaded two-run single keyed the eighth inning outburst, which also featured RBI singles from pinch-hitter Rickie Weeks, Michael Bourn and Paul Goldschmidt.

Chris Herrmann and Brandon Drury cracked back-to-back homers in the ninth off St. Louis third baseman Ruben Tejada, the first position player to pitch for the Cardinals since Daniel Descalso worked the ninth on May 12, 2014.

Patrick Corbin (2-3) earned the win after pitching 6 1/3 innings, allowing just four hits and two runs with four walks and seven strikeouts.

Carlos Martinez (4-4) absorbed his fourth straight loss after yielding seven hits and four runs in five innings, walking three and fanning three.

Aledmys Diaz knocked in two runs for St. Louis, singling Tejada home in the seventh to pull the Cardinals within 4-2. But reliever Tyler Clippard fanned Matt Holliday with the tying runs on base and the Diamondbacks blew the game open shortly thereafter.

Arizona (20-24) upped its road record to 13-7, while the Cardinals (22-20) dropped to 11-12 at home.

St. Louis made matters respectable with five runs in the ninth. Eric Fryer and Jedd Gyorko supplied RBI singles, Jeremy Hazelbaker knocked in a run with an infield out and Brandon Moss pinch-hit a two-run double.

The Cardinals got the tying run to the on-deck circle before rookie Jake Barrett retired Matt Carpenter for his first big league save.

Arizona opened the scoring with a two-out rally in the top of the first, loading the bases before Chris Herrmann stroked a two-run single to left that plated Paul Goldschmidt and Jake Lamb.

St. Louis got a run back in its half of the first with Aledmys Diaz's groundout to short that scored Matt Carpenter, who led off with a double to right-center and reached third when center fielder Michael Bourn bobbled the ball for an error.

The Diamondbacks upped their lead to 4-1 in the fifth with another two-run rally. Jean Segura's RBI single plated pitcher Patrick Corbin, who reached scoring position on a single and an error by center fielder Jeremy Hazelbaker, the Cardinals' major league-leading 37th error of the year.

Bourn then made up for his first-inning miscue, lining a run-scoring double to right-center.
