Shipley turns in dominant effort as Diamondbacks rout Mets
NEW YORK -- Braden Shipley threw seven shutout innings in his best start as a major leaguer and added an RBI single and a stolen base in the Arizona Diamondbacks' 9-0 win over the New York Mets on Thursday afternoon.
The Diamondbacks (48-66) swept the three-game series from the free-falling Mets (57-57), who dropped to .500 for the first time since April 20. New York, which is 10-19 dating to July 8, fell three games behind the Miami Marlins and the St. Louis Cardinals in the race for the National League's second wild card.
Shipley (2-1) allowed three hits and one walk while striking out seven. He entered Thursday having permitted eight runs on 17 hits and 11 walks over 17 1/3 innings in his first three major-league starts.
Shipley chipped in with the bat and his feet during a three-run fourth inning that provided the Diamondbacks the only runs they'd need. Chris Owings (3-for-5) led off with a double, went to third on a fly out by Brandon Drury and scored on a ground-rule double to left by Socrates Brito.
Tuffy Gosewich followed with an RBI triple and trotted home on Shipley's single up the middle. Shipley then stole second - one of four steals Thursday by the Diamondbacks, who set a club record for a series of any length by swiping 13 bases in the three games.
The Diamondbacks poured it on in the sixth, when Gosewich hit a leadoff homer, Jean Segura scored on a wild pitch and Owings laced a three-run triple before he came home on a sacrifice fly by Drury.
Five players had a hit apiece for the Mets, who were limited to 17 hits and five runs in the sweep.
Right-hander Noah Syndergaard (9-7) took the loss after allowing three runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out six over five innings. He has not won in his last six starts.
