Marlins 2, Dodgers 0
Justin Nicolino did something no Miami Marlins starter has accomplished all season -- get an out in the bottom of the eighth.
Nicolino's 7 1/3 scoreless innings Wednesday night led Miami to a 2-0 shutout of the Los Angeles Dodgers, giving the Marlins their first series win in Dodger Stadium since 2010.
It was the first big league start this year for Nicolino, who was called up earlier in the day. He gave up just two hits and walked two, fanning two.
Nicolino and Miami had to sweat out a crazy eighth inning in which his three immediate successors -- Bryan Morris, Cody Ege and David Phelps -- issued walks to fill the bases. Phelps and manager Don Mattingly were ejected by plate umpire Todd Tichenor after pinch-hitter Joc Pederson took a 3-2 pitch inside for the third walk.
Jose Urena bailed the Marlins out of that jam by fanning Yasiel Puig and getting a flyout from Adrian Gonzalez. Urena then sailed through a clean ninth for his first save as a big leaguer.
It was the fourth straight win for the Marlins (9-11), while Los Angeles (12-10) absorbed its third consecutive defeat.
Dodgers starter Scott Kazmir (1-2) was tagged with the loss, yielding seven hits and two runs in six innings. Kazmir, who threw 113 pitches, walked one and whiffed six.
Miami initiated the scoring in the top of the first with four singles, good for a pair of runs.
After Dee Gordon and Martin Prado started the game with hits, Giancarlo Stanton knocked Gordon home with a one-out, broken-bat hit to left. Marcell Ozuna followed with a groundball single to left that scored Prado from second.
Kazmir settled down from there, allowing only one hit in the next four innings.
NOTES: Los Angeles manager Dave Roberts said that LF Carl Crawford probably wouldn't play more than four times per week because of his "propensity to get injured," according to the Los Angeles Times. Crawford was activated from the 15-day disabled list Tuesday after recovering from a lower back ailment. ... Dodgers RHP Ross Stripling could be skipped in the rotation next week during the team's interleague trip to Toronto and Tampa Bay to keep his innings count down. ... Miami optioned RHP Nick Wittgren to Triple-A New Orleans to make room for Wednesday night's starter, LHP Justin Nicolino. Wittgren allowed one run in two innings during two relief outings for the Marlins.
