Phillies 5, Brewers 2
MILWAUKEE -- Maikel Franco hit two home runs and Aaron Nola struck out seven, leading the Philadelphia Phillies to a 5-2 win over the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday night at Miller Park.
Franco doubled his season total for home runs, connecting for a two-run blast in the fifth inning and adding a solo shot in the seventh off left-hander Chris Capuano, capping a three-hit game.
Nola (1-2) held Milwaukee to one run, four hits and two walks in seven innings -- the third time in four starts this season that he has gone seven innings.
Nola retired 16 of his final 17 batters, keeping the game close until the Phillies found a way to get to Brewers starter Zach Davies (0-2), who allowed nine of Philadelphia's 10 hits with a walk and five strikeouts in six innings in his second start of the season.
Chris Carter put Milwaukee on the board with a two-out RBI single in the first.
Davies worked himself in and out of trouble during the next three innings but got help from catcher Jonathan Lucroy, who thwarted two stolen base attempts.
Philadelphia tied it at 1 when Darin Ruf drove in Cameron Rupp with a two-out base hit in the fourth and took the lead an inning later when Odubel Herrera singled and scored on a Freddy Galvis triple.
Two pitches later, Franco made it 4-1 with a home run to left.
Milwaukee added a run in the ninth with back-to-back doubles by Carter and Aaron Hill, but Jeanmar Gomez retired the next three in order to close it out.
NOTES: Friday marked the start of Philadelphia's second road trip of the season. The Phillies will play 16 of their next 19 games away from Citizens Bank Park. ... Heading into Friday's game, the Phillies had lost 21 of their last 27 meetings with NL Central opponents, including all seven of their meetings with Milwaukee last season. ... The Brewers started the day ranked third in the National League with 65 walks through the first 16 games this season. During that same stretch a year ago, Brewers batters drew just 31 free passes. "We're not preaching walk and strikeout, believe me," Brewers manager Craig Counsell said. "We're preaching get good pitches to hit; be aggressive early in the count and when you get your pitch to hit." ... The series continues Saturday evening with Milwaukee RHP Chase Anderson (1-1, 2.35 ERA) facing Phillies RHP Charlie Morton (1-1, 3.86).
