Giants 6, Mets 1
NEW YORK -- Hunter Pence homered and finished with three RBIs Sunday afternoon and the San Francisco Giants stole four bases on their way to a 6-1 win over the New York Mets at Citi Field.
Left-hander Madison Bumgarner (3-2) continued his mastery of the Mets by throwing six shutout innings as the Giants (13-13) avoided being swept in the three-game series. Bumgarner is 4-0 with a 1.03 ERA in five career starts against the Mets and has thrown 18 straight scoreless innings at Citi Field, the longest streak by an opposing pitcher since the park opened in 2009.
David Wright had an RBI single in the seventh for the Mets (15-8), who had their eight-game winning streak snapped. New York has won 13 of its last 16 games.
Both of Pence's run-scoring hits were set up by the Giants' aggressiveness on the basepaths against Mets right-hander Noah Syndergaard. In the fourth, Matt Duffy singled with one out, stole second and went to third on a single by Buster Posey.
With a 3-2 count on Brandon Belt, Posey took off for second, which made turning a double play impossible and allowed Duffy to score when Belt grounded to second. Pence hit an opposite field homer two pitches later.
In the sixth, Duffy again singled with one out before stealing second base with two outs. After Belt drew a one-out walk, Pence singled to right to bring home Duffy.
The Giants built another run in the seventh, when Kolby Tomlinson singled, stole second and scored on a two-out single by Angel Pagan.
Posey added a solo homer in the eighth.
The Giants stole four bases for the first time since last Sept. 22 and stole four bases without being caught for the first time since May 24, 2012.
Syndergaard absorbed his first loss of the season after giving up four runs on five hits and two walks while striking out six. Opposing baserunners have stolen nine bases against him in as many tries in his last two starts.
