Gonzalez, Garcia lead Sox over Yankees
NEW YORK -- Miguel Gonzalez came within two outs of a complete-game shutout, and Avisail Garcia hit a long three-run home run in the seventh inning and the Chicago White Sox held on for a 4-1 victory over the New York Yankees on Tuesday night.
Gonzalez (2-0) retired the first 12 hitters and gave up four infield hits. He gave up one run on four hits in 8 1/3 innings. Gonzalez struck out four, walked one, threw 86 pitches and nearly tossed his second career complete game.
Leury Garcia also homered for the White Sox, who won for the fifth time in their past seven games.
New York's Luis Severino (1-1) allowed four runs (three earned) and three hits in a career-high eight innings. After getting a career-high 11 strikeouts against the Tampa Bay Rays on Thursday, Severino fanned 10 on Tuesday, eight of them in the first five innings.
Gonzalez lost his perfect game bid when Starlin Castro hit a broken-bat infield single to shortstop Tim Anderson in the fifth inning. Gonzalez then got Aaron Judge to bounce into a double play.
Gonzalez also allowed an infield hit by Austin Romine to start the eighth but ended the inning by using his changeup to get a strikeout on Brett Gardner.
The right-hander allowed a third infield hit on a bunt single by Jacoby Ellsbury to start the seventh. He quickly erased the threat when Matt Holliday hit into a double play.
Gonzalez put two on with one out in the ninth. Following a lengthy consultation with pitching coach Don Cooper, closer David Robertson came on.
Robertson loaded the bases by walking Ellsbury and gave up a run when he walked Castro. He finished the game by getting Judge on a forceout to notch his fourth save.
The White Sox opened a 1-0 lead when Garcia hit a 2-0 fastball over the right-center field fence. It was the center fielder's third career home run in 166 games.
The White Sox capitalized on a fielding error by shortstop Pete Kozma in the seventh to add more runs. Kozma misplayed Melky Cabrera's ground ball for an error but before Chicago scored again Jose Abreu popped up on a bunt on the first pitch.
After Abreu's bunt attempt, Garcia drove a 2-0 breaking ball well over the left-field wall for his third home run. It was Garcia's third home run and second in three games.
