Marlins pitchers nearly no-hit Mariners
SEATTLE -- Miami pitchers Wei-Yin Chen, Brad Ziegler and Kyle Barraclough combined for a one-hitter, Justin Bour had two hits, including a two-run home run in the third, and the Marlins shut out the Seattle Mariners 5-0 on Tuesday.
Miami lost the no-hit bid when Mitch Haniger singled with one out in the ninth inning against Kyle Barraclough.
Chen (2-0) was in full command throughout, throwing 64 of his 100 pitches for strikes, and keeping Seattle hitters off-balance with a low-70's curveball and changeup. Chen's brilliance nonetheless induced groundballs and weak fly balls over seven innings, allowing no hits, striking out two and walking two.
Ziegler worked a 1-2-3 eighth, before turning the game over for Barraclough, who struck out two in a scoreless ninth.
Mariners starter Yovani Gallardo (0-2) gave up runs in each of the first three innings, culminating in Bour's opposite-field blast, before settling and finishing with six innings pitched, allowing four runs on nine hits, while striking out three and walking none.
J.T. Riddle drove home Miguel Rojas with a sacrifice fly in the eighth off Mariners reliever Dan Altavilla.
Yelich drove home the game's first run on a high chopper off the plate in the first. It looked to be a big inning for Miami, with three men reaching safely and a run in before Gallardo recorded an out.
A strikeout and a pop-up set the stage for Mariners left fielder Guillermo Heredia, who perfectly timed his leap to take away a three-run homer from fellow left fielder Marcell Ozuna.
Marlins third baseman Derek Dietrich scored in the second on a wild pitch in the dirt that eluded Mariners catcher Carlos Ruiz to make it 2-0.
In the third, with a man on, Bour rode a Gallardo fastball the other way for his second home run of the year, increasing Miami's lead to 4-0.
Chen started the game razor sharp, retiring the first 11 Mariners faced before a 10-pitch battle with Robinson Cano led to a two-out walk, the only Seattle baserunner in the first five innings.
