Phillies push past Mets in 10 innings
NEW YORK -- Cameron Rupp scored the tying run in the eighth inning Tuesday night and lofted the go-ahead sacrifice fly during a four-run 10th inning as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the New York Mets 6-2 at Citi Field.
The Phillies (5-8) won for just the second time in seven games while the Mets (7-7) lost their fourth straight.
Michael Saunders led off the 10th inning by singling off the foot of Mets reliever Rafael Montero (0-2). Saunders advanced to third on a single by Tommy Joseph and trotted home on Rupp's fly out to the warning track in right field.
Joseph moved to second on a single by Freddy Galvis and scored on pinch hitter Aaron Altherr's single to center. Daniel Nava added a two-out, two-run single.
Luis Garcia (1-0) threw a hitless ninth.
Odubel Herrera homered in the first for the Phillies, who fell behind in the bottom of the inning when Jay Bruce delivered an RBI single and Yoenis Cespedes raced home on a wild pitch.
The score remained 2-1 until the eighth when Rupp drew a two-out walk, went to third when third baseman Jose Reyes dropped what should have been an inning-ending popup by Galvis and scored on a double by pinch hitter Andres Blanco.
Saunders, Herrera and Cesar Hernandez each had two hits.
Both starters -- Phillies right-hander Zach Eflin and New York right-hander Zack Wheeler -- settled down following the laborious first inning.
Eflin, who was recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley earlier in the day, allowed two runs on three hits and three walks in five innings. He struck out four in his season debut.
Wheeler allowed one run on four hits and two walks while striking out seven in five innings.
NOTES: To make room for RHP Zach Eflin on the 25-man roster, the Phillies placed RHP Clay Buchholz (torn right flexor tendon) on the 10-day disabled list. Buchholz underwent surgery Tuesday and is expected to miss four to six months. ... The Phillies also purchased the contract of RHP Mark Leiter Jr. and placed LF Howie Kendrick (right abdominal strain) on the 10-day DL. ... Mets 3B David Wright (neck, shoulder, back) is expected to begin full baseball activities this week. He hasn't played since last May 27. ... Mets RHP Jeurys Familia, who is eligible to return Thursday from a 15-game suspension for an offseason domestic violence incident, tossed a perfect inning for Double-A Binghamton on Monday.
