Dodgers' Ryu finally gets win, beats Phillies
LOS ANGELES -- Hyun-Jim Ryu earned his first win since 2014, Justin Turner extended his major-league-leading hitting streak to 15 games with a 3-for-4 day, and the Los Angeles Dodgers finished a sweep of their series against the Philadelphia Phillies with a 5-3 victory on Sunday at Dodger Stadium.
Turner had an RBI single in the first inning, and Andrew Toles hit a three-run home run to center, his fifth of the season, to pace a 13-hit attack. Every Dodgers starter except Yasiel Puig had at least one hit. Yasmani Grandal finished with three hits.
The Dodgers earned their sixth win in eight games, due in large part to Ryu, the 30-year-old left-hander from South Korea whose fast start to his American career came to a screeching halt in 2015.
Ryu was 28-15 in his first two seasons with the Dodgers after an impressive career in Korea. However, he sustained a shoulder injury and sat out the entire 2015 season. He rehabbed and returned in 2016 only to hurt his elbow in his only start, sidelining him again.
The Sunday start was Ryu's fifth of the season, and he entered the day 0-4 with a 4.64 ERA in his first four. After allowing two hits and a walk in the first inning, he settled down and retired 15 of the next 18 Phillies, exiting with one out in the sixth, having thrown 93 pitches.
Ryu was charged with one run on three hits and three walks. He struck out nine.
The Dodgers led 2-1 in the sixth when Toles broke the game open. Phillies reliever Jeanmar Gomez, replacing rookie Nick Pivetta (0-1), allowed a leadoff double to Grandal, then got two outs before walking pinch hitter Chase Utley.
Toles then hit a 2-0 pitch over the center field fence to make it 5-1.
Sergio Romo, Luis Avilan and Pedro Baez worked 2 2/3 scoreless innings of relief. Grant Dayton was touched for a two-run home run in the ninth by pinch hitter Odubel Herrera with two outs, and Kenley Jansen came in to record the last out for his seventh save.
The game did not start out well for Ryu. In the first inning, Cesar Hernandez tripled to right field off the glove of Puig, who ran a zig-zag pattern toward the deep drive, and Freddy Galvez singled to score Hernandez. It extended Galvez's hitting streak to 11 games.
Ryu walked Daniel Nava, then settled down and retired 12 of the next 13 Phillies.
The Dodgers were also tough on Pivetta who was making his major league debut. Toles hit a ground-rule double down the left-field line, went to third on Cody Bellinger's single to right and scored on Turner's single.
The Dodgers made it 2-1 in the second on Chris Taylor's second home run of the season. The Dodgers then had runners on the corners with one out, but Toles struck out and Bellinger flied out to left.
The Dodgers missed two other opportunities. They had runners in scoring position in the third on an Adrian Gonzalez single and Grandal ground-rule double, but Pivetta struck out Taylor to end the threat. Turner doubled with one out in the fifth but was stranded.
Pivetta limited Los Angeles to two runs on nine hits in five innings. He struck out five and walked one.
NOTES: The Dodgers expect to get three position players back from the disabled list in the next five to 10 days -- 2B Logan Forsthye (toe) and OF Joc Pederson (groin) and OF Franklin Gutierrez (knee). Their return will force some roster juggling. Rookie OF Cody Bellinger, who hit two home runs in Saturday's win, may return to Triple-A Oklahoma City so he can play every day rather than be a reserve. ... Dodgers LHP Rich Hill (blisters) pitched a three-inning simulated game before Sunday's game and is expected to make a rehab start Thursday. ... The Dodgers will add long-time announcer Vin Scully to the team's ring of honor in pregame ceremonies Wednesday. ... Phillies RHP Aaron Nola (back) won't be activated from the disabled list as expected. He experienced pain in his back after a bullpen session. ... Phillies 3B Maikel Franco, who had 32 plate appearances without a strikeout, struck out in each of his first three at-bats Sunday and went 0-for-4.
