Syndergaard shackles Giants in Mets' 4-1 win

Noah Syndergaard threw a two-hitter for the first complete game of his career, and Michael Conforto hit a two-run homer in the second inning Sunday afternoon, guiding the visiting New York Mets to a 4-1 victory over the San Francisco Giants.

Syndergaard (10-3) became the Mets' first 10-game winner this season, going the distance in his 81st career start. He walked one and struck out a season-high-tying 11.

The former All-Star gave up a triple to Alen Hanson in the third inning that was followed by a Chris Stratton sacrifice fly. Syndergaard yielded a one-out single to Evan Longoria in the fourth, then retired 17 of the last 18 batters he faced.

The Giants' only baserunner in the final five innings came via a throwing error by Mets first baseman Jay Bruce on a Brandon Belt ground ball in the seventh.

Conforto gave Syndergaard all the offensive support he would need when he followed a Todd Frazier double in the second with his sixth home run since Aug. 12 and his 20th of the season. He totaled 27 homers last year.

Stratton (9-8) exited a 2-1 game after pitching six innings of three-hit ball, allowing two runs. He struck out two and did not walk a batter.

The Mets gave their pitcher a cushion with a two-run eighth. Tomas Nido singled, went to second on sacrifice by Syndergaard and took third on Amed Rosario's single.

After Rosario stole second, Jeff McNeil drove home both baserunners with a single off Giants reliever Sam Dyson.

McNeil finished with two hits for the Mets, won who the three-game series despite losing 7-0 on Friday night.

Frazier had two doubles for New York, which out-hit San Francisco 7-2.

The loss dropped the Giants 8 1/2 games behind the St. Louis Cardinals in the race for the second National League wild-card spot.
