Three-time UFC title challenger Chael Sonnen is willing to shed an extra 20 pounds in hopes of getting back into the title picture.
After getting decimated by former UFC light heavyweight champ Rashad Evans at UFC 167 this Saturday, “The American Gangster” announced his intentions to drop back down to 185 pounds during the UFC 167 Post-Fight show on FOX Sports 1.
“I had one problem tonight and that is I fought someone who’s a better fighter than I am,” Sonnen said. “I thought there were spots I could beat him. I come up short in my last three fights in that exact same position. I gotta work on that.”
Sonnen went on to add that he has “always struggled at 205” and “can scramble” and not be held in bad positions much better at 185 pounds.
The Team Reign Training Center fighter is now just 3-4 in his past seven fights, with a disappointing 1-2 mark since returning to a higher weight class.
Despite a disappointing stretch, Sonnen remains the no. 7 light heavyweight in the world according to the UFC’s official rankings.
Conveniently, the 43-fight veteran already has his next bout lined up, as he settles the score with old rival Wanderlei Silva next year.
The two will coach opposite one another on season 3 of The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil before they square off inside the Octagon on a yet to be determined venue.
While the matchup was “The Axe Murderer” initially viewed as an “easy fight” for Sonnen, the 36-year-old has been TKO’ed in three of his past four fights after going 10 fights (and just over four years) without getting stopped via strikes.
