UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson put on an instant classic at UFC 165 on Saturday, with fighters and fans alike already ranking the title bout among the greatest MMA fights of all time.
At the UFC 165 post-fight show on FOX Sports 2, “The Mauler” indicated he was happy with his performance and that he has no one to blame but himself for the judges siding with the titleholder:
“I learned a lot from this fight," Gustafsson said. "He's the champ for a reason. To take the belt from the champ you need to finish him. That's how it is and I didn't do it.”
“The biggest lesson is I have to push the pace harder. I just did what I thought I could do and it wasn’t enough. I will come back stronger and better. I’m disappointed, but I’m very proud of what I did and my team.”
Many pundits believed Gustafsson should’ve earned a 48-47 nod on each of the three judges’ scorecards, winning the first three rounds, but the Swedish striker did not win more than two rounds on any of the official scores.
The loss snapped a six-fight win streak for the Alliance MMA standout, but the defeat actually made his stop rise just as high as a victory would have.
Finding his way into the win column yet again, “Bones” Jones has now won 10 fights in a row, including six successful title defenses, breaking Tito Ortiz’s light heavyweight record.
Fans are already chomping at the bit for Jones-Gustafsson II, though UFC President Dana White has so far been non-committal as to who will fight for the light heavyweight strap next.
Legitimate contenders Glover Teixeira and Daniel Cormier are waiting in the wings, but it would be hard to imagine the UFC not booking an immediate rematch given the incredible 25-minute spectacle put on by Jones and Gustafsson.
