Former longtime UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva was hospitalized due to lower back pain on Monday, but the injury is considered minor and won’t keep him from a January showdown with Nick Diaz.
Brazilian MMA media outlet Tatame first reported that “The Spider” experienced pain and numbness in his legs following a training session at Rio de Janiero’s X-Gym.
The situation was simply diagnosed as acute lumbar pain and Silva was released yesterday.
Silva, who has been on the sidelines since suffering a horrific leg break against Chris Weidman at UFC 168 in December, will retain early next year against the fight community’s favorite Stockton bad boy.
Fight fans have been wondering how Silva will look inside the Octagon after sustaining such a serious injury at 39 years old.
However, many believe this matchup will be a “gimme” for him, since Diaz has never fought at middleweight in 36 professional fights.
Also not known for his wrestling chops, naysayers believe Diaz will get stocked with strikes early in the scheduled five-round contest.
Still, the Cesar Gracie Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt’s cardio, boxing and iron chin give him at least a marginal shot against Silva.
