Fans already know that Cain Velasquez will be defending his UFC heavyweight title against Fabricio Werdum in his next championship bout, but the wait may be longer than what was expected.
Velasquez vs. Werdum is currently on hold as the champion awaits the MRI results on his shoulder, an injury that may require surgery, Yahoo! Sports reported on Wednesday.
In the same article, UFC President Dana White shot down the rumor that the anticipated heavyweight title clash would take place at UFC 172 in Mexico.
"We haven't offered anyone a fight for that card and Cain is injured right now and might need surgery," White said. "Obviously, we're not going to Mexico without Cain Velasquez."
Bob Cook, Valesquez’s manager, shed some light on the injury, though not a ton of details were available.
"He's had one MRI already, but we're going to get another one that is hopefully of better quality," Cook said.
"He hurt it during the fight, but we're not exactly sure when or how it happened. Right now, we're waiting to get this other MRI before we know what we have to do, whether there's a need for minor surgery or just rehab."
Velasquez has now avenged his only career loss against Junior dos Santos twice, most recently beating his Brazilian counterpart at UFC 166 last month by round five TKO.
The American Kickboxing Academy standout has now won four straight bouts, including three TKO’s.
His next opponent, Werdum, currently boasts three straight wins inside the Octagon during his second stint with the company.
