Dan Hardy: GSP Should’ve Handed the Title to Johny Hendricks After UFC 167

Former UFC welterweight title challenger Dan Hardy is in the majority of fight fans that believe long-time champion Georges St-Pierre should have lost his title to Johny Hendricks at UFC 167.

As a matter of fact, “The Outlaw” believes the French-Canadian superstar should have handed over his belt to Hendricks regardless since he knew he would be taking a hiatus from the sport afterwards.

Hardy said as much in an interview with Fight Now TV (transcription via MMA Fighting):

“The only thing I'm uncomfortable with is the way it was finished, the way it came to an end,” Hardy said.

“I watched the press conference and, for me, the best thing to do would have been for Georges to walk out, hand Johny Hendricks the belt and say, 'I'm done for a while, when I want the belt back I'll come and get it.' Just left it at that."

Hardy challenged GSP for the belt at UFC 111 in March 2010, losing a lopsided decision as he had no answers for “Rush’s” superior grappling during their 25-minute affair.

After losing three more bouts, the English bad bay amazingly remained on the UFC’s payroll and bounced back with consecutive wins over Duane Ludwig and Amir Sadollah.

Unfortunately for Hardy, an irregular heartbeat has kept Hardy out of the cage since September and it remains up in the air as to whether or not he can resume his fighting career.

Hendricks gets his second crack at UFC gold at UFC 171 in March, when he fights “Ruthless” Robbie Lawler for the vacant championship belt.
