After being involved in a very serious car crash just over a month ago, friends and family members initially hoped for the best and feared for the worst about UFC featherweight Matt Grice.
However, as the days turned into weeks, it appears more and more likely that Grice, who is also a police officer in Oklahoma, will make a full recovery.
UFC President Dana White shed some light in the situation through a series of text messages he sent to MMA Fighting on Tuesday.
“His wife sent me a text telling me that he's getting better," White wrote. "First they were talking about real bad things could happen. Then it was like, he might never walk again and he might never work again. Now the doctors are very positive."
"The whole tone has changed," he also said over text. "He's got a lot of work ahead of him, a lot of hard work ahead of him, but it's looking like he might be able to pull through and get his life back."
Grice, who is just 1-2 since returning to the UFC in June 2011, was scheduled to face Jeremy Larsen at UFC 166 next Saturday, but was removed from the event in light of his car accident.
Andre Fili, a star on the regional MMA scene, stepped up to the plate to face Larsen at the event on short notice.
Grice most recently had a “Fight of the Night” performance against Dennis Bermudez at UFC 157 in February, losing a back-and-forth scrap via split decision.
The bout was so action-packed, with several near finishes on both ends, many fans and analysts have pegged it as a top candidate for 2013’s prestigious “Fight of the Year” award.
