In wake of the news that now former UFC welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre will be taking a hiatus from mixed martial arts, UFC President Dana White has revealed the French-Canadian superstar will not be receiving any money from the UFC during his time off.
“His contract freezes,” White explained at Friday’s press conference. “If Georges St-Pierre stays out for six months or six years, his contract is frozen. So when he comes back, his contract will start again with his first fight [upon his return].”
According to MMA Manifesto, St-Pierre was the eighth earner on the UFC’s payroll in 2012, taking home $470,000, despite only competing inside the Octagon once last year.
Bear in mind that figure does not taking into account any of the UFC’s infamous “locker room bonuses,” nor does it account for sponsorship earnings.
GSP takes a leave of absence, with no timetable in mind, on the heels of a controversial title defense against top contender Johny Hendricks at UFC 167 last month.
“Rush” was awarded the split decision by the judges, despite the overwhelming majority of pundits believing Hendricks had done enough to dethrone the champion.
Like it or not, the victory was St-Pierre’s 12 in a row, also marking his ninth consecutive successful title defense.
It’s not all bad news for Hendricks though, as White announced that “Bigg Rigg” would fight Robbie Lawler for the vacant title at UFC 171 on March 15.
White has also made mention that former interim champ Carlos Condit will fight on the UFC 171 card, hinting he would be involved in a title eliminator bout, but as a Saturday night an opponent is yet to be announced.
