UFC middleweight contender Vitor Belfort has been nearly silent since the Nevada State Athletic Commission banned testosterone replacement therapy in late February and UFC President Dana White admits he’s not sure what’s next for “The Phenom.”
The UFC’s head honcho said as much in the UFC on FOX 11 pre-fight media scrum (per MMA Fighting).
"I haven’t spoke to Vitor since that whole thing went down," White said. "Like I say all the time, the media got what they want, Vitor’s gone."
"I haven’t heard a word from him. He’s got a lot of s--- to clear up. He’s got to handle that, not us."
White also indicated that he was no longer sure if he would face of the winner of Chris Weidman vs. Lyoto Machida at UFC 175 on July 5.
Belfort was originally scheduled to fight UFC middleweight champ Chris Weidman for the strap at UFC 173 on May 24, but withdrew (according o the UFC) or was pulled (according to Belfort) following the NSAC’s ban on TRT.
Belfort had unceremoniously become the poster boy for what was wrong with TRT due to his career resurgence after using the controversial treatment, as well as a well-muscled physique to boot.
The Brazilian slugger hasn’t fought on American soil since August 2011 and has compiled a 4-1 record since then, with his only loss being a loss to light heavyweight champion Jon Jones in September 2012.
The 37-year-old is currently riding a three-fight win streak (all knockouts) over top-tier competition in Luke Rockhold, Michael Bisping and Dan Henderson.
Will Belfort be able to achieve the highest level of success in the UFC without TRT or has the apex of his career come and gone with the controversial treatment no longer an option?
