Dana White: Jose Aldo vs. Ricardo Lamas Possible for UFC 169 in New Jersey

After waiting in the wings for the better part of this year, Ricardo Lamas may finally get his shot at UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo.

Lamas vs. Aldo is being discussed for UFC 169, which takes place on February 1 in New Jersey, according to UFC President Dana White during the UFC 166 media scrum on Thursday.

While it may not be the most enticing matchup from a casual fans perspective, especially after the event lost a light heavyweight championship bout between Jon Jones and Glover Teixeira earlier this month, Lamas is one of the few viable opponents left for Aldo at featherweight.

Since dropping down to 145 pounds in mid-2011, “The Bully” has rattled off four straight wins, including three stoppages, over the likes of Matt Grice, Cub Swanson and Erik Koch.

A good wrestler with great ground-and-pound and submission defense, on paper, Lamas provides an interesting challenge for “Scarface.”

Of course, Aldo is one of the most dominant champions of all time, notching seven successful title defenses between the WEC and UFC.

As a matter of fact, the highly touted Brazilian striker, who also has a black belt in jiu-jitsu, has never lost at featherweight in 24 professional fights.

His sole pro loss came at lightweight back in November 2005 and he has scored an incredible 16 wins in a row since then.

While negotiations are just in the preliminary stages, a potential Aldo vs. Lamas title fight would be a shoe-in to headline UFC 169.

Would Lamas be able to pull off the massive upset and finally wear UFC gold or would Aldo continue his over four-year reign atop the division?
