After Strikeforce recently had to cancel their September card when headliner/lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez separated his shoulder during fight week, finding an opponent to replace Frank Mir against Daniel Cormier for the Nov. 3 card has become a top priority.
UFC president Dana White thought the matter was settled when UFC heavyweight Matt Mitrione was offered to the fight with “DC,” which takes place at the Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
However, “Meathead” turned down the fight and White had no problem expressing his displeasure to MMA Junkie after the UFC on FUEL 5 post-fight presser.
"It f---ing makes me sick," White said "Listen, you don't want big opportunities, I hear you. I get it, then. All I can say is, I guess he doesn't want big opportunities. I get it. Duly noted.”
White also mocked the 34-year-old “The Ultimate Fighter” alumnus for calling out Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, a career light heavyweight.
"He wants to fight a guy who weighs 205, but doesn't want to fight the guy who's the real heavyweight, the legitimate guy who's ranked. And Mitrione's not getting any younger."
In Mitrione’s defense, he does currently have a bout signed: he’s set to take on Phil De Fries at UFC 155, scheduled for Dec. 29 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
While Mitrione did not speak with MMA Junkie directly, White indicated that the former NFL football player simply said “'I'll just take that one," picking the already booked De Fries fight over a crossover bout with “DC.”
Just in case anyone was hoping for eventual Octagon showdown between De Fries and Rampage, White called that idea “f----in’ insane.”
Did Mitrione make a mistake by not accepting a match up with a top 10 fighter or was he simply doing the sensible thing by not signing up for a fight he would lose?
