Boasting a perfect 21-0 record as a professional mixed martial artist, with five of those victories coming inside the Octagon, it seems like no one wants to fight surging lightweight contender Khabib Nurmagomedov.
Linked to a matchup at UFC 170 next month with former Strikeforce champ Gilbert Melendez for weeks, that bout ended up being scrapped last week with no details of the situation being revealed.
With that in mind, the high-level Russian grappler was linked to matchup with Melendez’s Cesar Gracie Jiu-Jitsu teammate, Nate Diaz.
However, according to UFC President Dana White, Diaz turned the fight down.
“@EDLEZGIN @TeamKhabib Nate turned the fight down,” White tweeted on Saturday in response to a fan asking for a Nurmagomedov vs. Diaz bout.
Diaz, who is 1-2 in his past three fights and struggled with strong wrestlers in the past, did not take long to respond and was adamant that he was never offered the fight in question.
“@danawhite @ufc are full of s*** I didn't turn down anything,” Diaz tweeted back.
Since then, Michael Johnson, who has won two straight over UFC veterans Joe Lauzon and Gleison Tibau, and former WEC champ Jamie Varner have offered their services to fight Nurmagomedov.
As of Sunday afternoon, Nurmagomedov remains unbooked, with his last win being a decisive win over former Strikeforce contender Pat Healy at UFC 165 in September.
