The reason the long-awaited grudge match between Chael Sonnen and Wanderlei Silva was due to injuries “The Axe Murderer” suffered during their infamous brawl on The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil 3, according to UFC President Dana White.
White spoke about the unfortunate predicament at the post-fight press conference for the TUF Nations Finale Wednesday night (transcription per MMA Fighting).
"What happened was Wanderlei got hurt in that fight," White said about the incident, which aired on Sunday. "He got double legged on the concrete and he hurt his back. He hurt his hand punching Chael in the head and he got injured.”
“He couldn't fight on time because he got hurt in the fight f------- coaching a show. I'm done being angry now. I was angry when it happened. It's just disgusting. What are you going to do?"
Sonnen vs. Silva was originally scheduled to take place at UFC 173 on May 24 in Las Vegas, serving as the co-main event of the evening.
That billing did not last long, as just days later the matchup was moved to an unnamed UFC Fight Night event on May 31, which was expected to be hosted at a to be determined venue in Brazil.
Now, following the impromptu fight on the TUF set, the light heavyweight scrap has been moved to UFC 175 on July 5.
White insisted that, as of now, the matchup will take place this summer.
However, Sonnen has been adamant that he doesn’t believe “Can-derlei,” as he’s referred to him on his Twitter page, will show up for a fight with him – regardless when the date is.
Therefore, “The American Gangster” has recently been campaigning for a fight with ex-UFC middleweight champ Rich Franklin.
Will Sonnen vs. Silva actually go down inside the Octagon or will this turnout to be another fantasy fight that just wasn’t mean to be?
