Diego Sanchez: ‘I’m Not Taking a Lot of Damage,’ I’m Unbeatable in Albuquerque

One of the original Ultimate Fighter winners, Diego Sanchez, is just 3-5 in his past eight fights, but he believes he’s far from done in the fight game.

Speaking with FOX Sports, the competitor formerly known as “The Nightmare” brushes off the notion that he has taken too much damage in the recent portion of his fight career.

"To be honest, I don't feel like I've been hit very hard. I think when I was fighting at 70, I took a couple hard hits and of course BJ (Penn) hit me hard, but aside from that, I think it's more cuts than anything,” Sanchez pleaded.

“I'm not taking a lot of damage, I've never felt foggy after a fight, I've never had a concussion in a fight and I've never been knocked out. As far as taking all the trauma, no, that's not the issue.  It's the cuts."

The Greg Jackson’s MMA Fighter went on to say that after his June 7 showdown with Ross Pearson, which takes place on his home turf of Albuquerque, New Mexico (where he feels “unbeatable”), he plans on having surgery to scrape down scar tissue in his face.

The procedure would prevent his face from splitting open at every hard punch, which has been the case more often than not since December 2009 when he was utterly dominated by Penn in a lightweight title tilt.

Sanchez, a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, looks to rebound after back-to-back losses to upcoming title challenger Gilbert Melendez and surging prospect Myles Jury.

The 32-year-old blamed a lifeless performance against Jury about two weeks ago on food poisoning, which some pundits have written off as a weak excuse.

Whatever the case may be, Sanchez still thinks he is one of the top talents in the sport and has plenty of good fights ahead of him inside the Octagon.
