Doctor: Vitor Belfort Will Need 90 Days to Adapt to Training Without TRT

UFC middleweight contender Vitor Belfort is going to be forced to stop using testosterone replacement therapy after a ruling by the Nevada State Athletic Commission banning the controversial treatment on Thursday.

With other athletic commissions following suit, “The Phenom” is claiming his doctor informed him that it will take 90 days for his body to acclimate to training without TRT.

Belfort posted a long message to his followers on Instagram in Portuguese, which was translated by MMA Fighting.

“Vitor Belfort’s TRT have always been a medical decision aimed to health improvement," the statement says.

"The same treatment strategy is available and widely prescribed to every patient who makes the decision to live better and healthier life through their natural ageing process.”

“We are going to need 90 days to adapt Vitor's treatment and nutrition in order to support his extremely hard training routine – This is what makes Vitor one of the best fighters on UFC history and the most dedicated athlete I've ever had the honor to work with."

The statement also states that TRT never gave Belfort an added advantage and that his success came from a rigorous training schedule, a strict diet and plenty of rest.

Belfort was set to challenge UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman at UFC 173, but withdrew, later claiming to be removed by the company, from the bout in favor of Lyoto Machida.

The UFC’s short term plans for the Brazilian knockout specialist have not been announced, though Belfort claims he will face the winner of Weidman vs. Machida later this year.
