Donald Cerrone: I’m Dropping to 145 Pounds After UFC 167 Fight with Evan Dunham

Former WEC lightweight champ Donald Cerrone apparently believes his best days at 155 pounds are behind him, so he’s going to test the waters at featherweight in 2014.

“Cowboy” said as much when speaking to The Denver Post on Monday:

"It was my idea," said Cerrone, 30. "(UFC’s) response was, ‘As long as you do it healthy, it’s fine.’ Right now, my diet, I can eat what I want. I’m not really disciplined on that side. But if I tighten up what I eat and train a little harder, I’ll be fine," he said.

During a Google + fan chat, which also took place yesterday, Cerrone stated “he felt like he could really dominate down there” and would be open to going back-and-forth between featherweight and lightweight.

The move comes as a bit of a shock considering that Cerrone is six feet tall and has a 73-inch reach – not to mention that the Greg Jackson’s MMA fighter has never competed below 155 pounds in 27 professional fighters.

However, the perennial lightweight contender has been mediocre against upper-level competition recently, posting just a 3-3 record in his past six bouts.

According to the UFC’s official rankings, Cerrone is the number 10 lightweight in the world.

However, it would be nearly impossible for him to climb the ranks at this point with losses against Nate Diaz (number 8), Rafael dos Anjos (number 6) and Benson Henderson (twice, number 1).

Will a move to featherweight rejuvenate the 30-year-old Cerrone’s career or are his best days inside the cage already behind him?
