Ex-UFC Champ Frankie Edgar Says Chris Weidman Will Beat Anderson Silva
Add Frankie Edgar to the list of prominent UFC fighters who believe that Chris Weidman will have long-reigning middleweight champ’s number at UFC 162 July 6.
During a live chat with UFC.com, a fan asked “The Answer” who he thought would win the 185-pound title clash.
“Gotta go with the East Coast boy Weidman. He’s the whole package,” Edgar wrote. “Anderson has fought good wrestlers, but Chris has got great jiu-jitsu and a solid stand-up game as well.”
Weidman enters the bout as one of the top prospects in the fight business, with an undefeated 9-0 record, including six stoppages (three submissions and three knockouts).
“The All-American” was also a two-time All-American wrestler at Hofstra University and has earned his brown belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Of course, no one in MMA has a resume as impressive as Anderson Silva.
“The Spider” has an undefeated 16-0 record inside the Octagon and holds the UFC middleweight record with 10 consecutive title defenses.
Meanwhile, Edgar is currently ranked as the number 10 pound-for-pound fighter in the world, despite currently being on a three-fight skid.
In all fairness, the losses were to UFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson (twice) and featherweight titleholder Jose Aldo and all three bouts were close decisions.
The New Jersey native hopes to get back to his winning ways at UFC 162, where he fights jiu-jitsu ace Charles Oliveira on the main card.
Edgar, welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre, former 205-pound titleholder Rashad Evans and perennial 155-pound contender Gray Maynard have all shown their support for Weidman in one way or another in the upcoming title fight.
Will Weidman be able to live up to the hype or will Silva walk away virtually unscathed for the 17th time under the UFC banner?
