After easily the roughest stretch of his career, embattled UFC veteran Rousimar Palhares has a new home.
“Toquinho” has officially been signed by the World Series of Fighting, MMA Junkie reported on Monday evening.
“Rousimar is one of the most talented athletes in mixed martial arts, and we’re excited to have him as a part of our organization,” WSOF President Ray Sefo said.
At one point, Sefo said he would not consider signing the controversial Palhares, but begin signing a different tune after respected fight veteran/trainer Renzo Gracie spoke out in favor of his fellow Brazilian grappler.
No details of his contract have been disclosed, but the leg lock specialist is rumored to make his promotional debut in March of next year.
MMA Junkie also reports WSOF is angling to book Palhares against former Bellator welterweight champ Ben Askren, whom they offered a contract to 11 days ago.
That matchup is anything but finalized though, as Askren is yet to accept or decline the offer.
As eDraft reported, “Funky” met with UFC CEO Lorenzo Fertitta yesterday, though UFC President Dana White insisted the former Olympic-level wrestler would not be offered a contract.
As for Palhares, the UFC unceremoniously parted ways with the hulking Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt after cranking a heel hook on Mike Pierce at UFC Fight Night 29 last month, holding onto the submission hold after the ref had waived the fight off.
The 33-year-old was suspended for 90 days by the New Jersey State Athletic Commission for the exact same infraction at UFC 111 in March 2010, with the victim this time being Tomasz Drwal.
Palhares enters the new fight promotion with a record of 4-3 in his past seven bouts, with all but one of those matchups producing a finish.
