Former longtime UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva shattered his left ankle on current champ Chris Weidman’s knee at UFC 168 on Saturday, and if you’re into conspiracy theories, one fan called it 24 hours in advance.
Twitter user Tim Rueben wished Silva good luck shortly after weigh-ins concluded on Friday, using what would turn out to be a very poor choice of words.
”@SpiderAnderson Break a leg tomorrow! Hopefully not yours!” Rueben wrote.
The message has been retweeted over 16,000 times and counting, while Rueben has received countless nasty messages from fans after the fight went down the way it did on Saturday night.
Despite how unforgiving the injury appeared at first, with Silva being stretchered out of the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada for immediate surgery, his surgeon indicated that the pound-for-pound great could resume training in six to nine months.
While he may continue to perform at a high level inside the gym, many fans and analysts alike believe Silva will ultimately end up retiring as a result of the injury – largely due to the fact he will be 39 years old by the time he is able to resume training.
Silva holds the UFC record for the most successful title defenses (10) as well as consecutive victories (16) and is one of the biggest pay-per-view draws in the company’s history.
Furthermore, Weidman is the only fighter to knockout Silva in 39 professional fights, and is also the only man to hold two wins over the Brazilian legend.
Silva is yet to formally announce any plans to return or retire at this point, noting only that he is going to take this time off to recuperate with his family.
