Former UFC and Pride champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira suffered a brutal knockout loss against Roy Nelson Friday afternoon at UFC Fight Night 39 in Abu Dhabi, his fourth loss (all finishes) in his past six fights.
Despite not having strung a win streak together since 2008, “Big Nog” feels he still has to settle some unfinished business with Frank Mir before calling it a career.
Nogueira’s manager, Jorge Guimaraes, told MMA Fighting why he thinks completing a trilogy with Mir makes sense, despite being 0-2 against the fellow ex-UFC heavyweight titleholder.
"Maybe a last fight against Frank Mir to square off and retire," Guimaraes suggested. "He mentioned that way before his fight against Roy Nelson was scheduled. He just can't live without avenging these loses."
Guimaraes also confirmed that Nogueira remained interested in a potential third fight with Mir even after the devastating first round KO to “Big Country.”
The first time Mir met the fellow decorated Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt inside the Octagon, at UFC 92 in December 2008, where Mir became the first fighter to stop his Brazilian counterpart with strikes.
In their rematch at UFC 140 in December 2011, Nogueira looked well on his way to scoring a TKO over Mir after dropping him with a hard overhand right in the first round.
However, rather than looking to finish with strikes, Nogueira attempted a guillotine choke, and Mir managed to roll out of the submission attempt and scramble into one of his own.
Nogueira, who had previously never been submitted, refused to tap out to the tightly locked kimura, opting to have his arm snapped like a twig instead.
Mir himself is currently in the midst of a four-fight losing streak, so it’s unclear if the UFC will give him another fight at all, let alone a lackluster one on paper with Nogueira.
