UFC welterweight contender Rory MacDonald may have just returned to his winning ways at UFC 170 on Saturday, but he still believes he’s ready for fight for championship gold.
“Ares”, who defeated Brazilian jiu-jitsu ace Demian Maia at last week’s pay-per-view event, sent out a tweet early Tuesday morning asking for a shot at the winner of UFC 171’s main event next month.
“I would like to fight the winner of hendricks and lawler @ufc @danawhite,” MacDonald wrote.
The Tristar Gym standout has won six of his past seven fights, defeating notables such as BJ Penn, Jake Ellenberger and Maia.
With that in mind, MacDonald, the no. 4 ranked welterweight in the UFC’s official rankings, would be a hard sell for a title shot if Lawler wins the belt.
The “Ruthless” one defeated MacDonald via split decision at UFC 167 in November.
Lawler has been on a tear since returning to the 170-pound division, defeating the likes of Josh Koscheck, Bobby Voelker and MacDonald.
Hendricks and Lawler clash for the vacant title on March 15, which MacDonald’s teammate/mentor Georges St-Pierre gave up in December in favor of a hiatus from the sport.
Carlos Condit, who handed MacDonald his first loss in June 2010, fights Tyron Woodley at UFC 171 and could be booked for the next title shot or a title eliminator with MacDonald.
Does a convincing decision win over Maia propel MacDonald to a title shot or is he still at least a win or two away?
