Frank Mir Granted TRT Exemption for UFC 169 Bout Against Alistair Overeem

Former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir has been granted his third consecutive testosterone replacement therapy usage exemption in a row for UFC 169, MMA Fighting reported on Wednesday.

Ironically, Mir faces ex-Strikeforce/K-1 champ Alistair Overeem, who missed out on a chance to fight for the UFC’s heavyweight strap at UFC 146 in May 2012 when he failed a pre-fight drug test for elevated levels of testosterone.

UFC 146 also happened to be the first time Mir received a TRT TUE, did not apply for one at his UFC on FOX 7 bout against Daniel Cormier, then again received the controversial treatment against Josh Barnett at UFC 164 in August.

As it turns out, Mir lost his title bid against Junior dos Santos and his matchup with Barnett by knockout, so it would seem TRT did not affect his performance inside the Octagon.

Despite seemingly having his back against the wall after losing all three of the aforementioned bouts, Mir has told various media outlets he has no plans to retire after his fight with Overeem, win or lose.

“The Demolition Man” has had struggles of his own inside the cage since his failed drug test, suffering back-to-back knockouts to Antonio Silva and Travis Browne.

The worst part for the hulking heavyweight is that he was dominating both matchups before suffering a brutal come-from-behind knockout.

While it remains up in the air if Mir vs. Overeem is a loser leaves town bout, both competitors are inarguably in desperate need of a win if they want to remain relevant in the division.
