Gray “The Bully” Maynard is one of just two fighters to have defeated former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar and came within inches of dethroning Edgar from the 155-pound division’s throne on two occasions.
Still, Maynard came up short in his title bids against “The Answer” at both UFC 125 and UFC 136. Don’t think Maynard is ready to give up on his world title dreams just yet just because someone else is wearing the gold now.
“Nate’s on a roll; I think he’ll pull it out. If he does, I know he was begging for me for a long time, but for me I was looking at the title and that’s a fight that would be a great fight for the title,” Maynard said in an interview with MMA Weekly.
Yesterday, the UFC announced that Benson Henderson will defend his title for the second time against Nate Diaz at UFC on FOX 5, scheduled for Dec. 8. The venue is still to be determined, though the event is widely considered to take place in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Maynard also expressed interest in coaching “The Ultimate Fighter” opposite Diaz. The two first met on the show during season five of TUF, where Diaz submitted Maynard with a guillotine choke.
“I’d like to do the TV show against him if that’s the case …For me as of now, it’s about going up against the top guys. Like I don’t care about paydays, and stuff like that. Right now it’s about beating the top guys and getting the belt,” said Maynard.”
Maynard got his revenge on Diaz when he defeated him by controversial split decision at UFC Fight Night 20 in Jan. 2010. The bout was generally criticized by fans as being a boring boxing match.
The former All-American wrestler at Michigan State University is 2-1-1 in his past four fights, most recently winning a bizarre split decision over Clay Guida, who refused to engage his opponent for five rounds, at UFC on FX 4 in June.
Would a third bout with Diaz be intriguing enough to give The Bully his third UFC title shot or will “Bendo” defend the title and put this conversation to bed entirely?
