Jake Ellenberger: Robbie Lawler’s Hype is ‘a Little Bit Overblown’

UFC welterweight contender Jake Ellenberger is squaring off with Robbie Lawler at UFC 173 tonight and he certainly isn’t intimidated by the recent title challengers recent work inside the cage.

“The Juggernaut” went as far as to say Lawler’s recent record is a bit padded at Thursday’s media scrum (per Bloody Elbow).

"I think that's been a little bit overblown. He beat a guy like Bobby Voelker (and) a few guys that aren't top ten guys, sure. He had an impressive win over (Josh) Koscheck, also who hasn't been really relevant in a long time, but I'm excited to fight him,” Ellenberger said.

Lawler is 3-1 since returning to the UFC, most recently losing a hard-fought decision to Johny Hendricks at UFC 171 in March to crown a new welterweight champion.

Prior to the tough defeat, the “Ruthless” won defeated Koscheck, Voelker and Rory MacDonald – handing the Canadian upstart just his second professional loss.

MacDonald entered the matchup with Lawler on the cusp of a title shot, defeating none other than Ellenberger in a lackluster affair at UFC on FOX 8 in July.

According to the UFC’s official rankings, Ellenberger is the No. 5 welterweight in the world, while Lawler occupies the top spot on the list.

Both competitors are capable of ending a fight with one big punch, so whoever lands first could easily earn themselves the next shot at Hendricks this fall.

However, it is also possible that the winner could be matched up with surging contender Matt Brown, who boasts a seven-fight win streak.
